Baldness (Androgenetic
Alopecia)
Baldness occurs both in men and women as their
age advances.
The baldness which occurs in men is called “male pattern baldness”
and is characterized by receding hairline and loss of hair on the
crown area. It is generally experienced around and from age of 25
years.
The baldness which occurs in women is called “female pattern
baldness” and is characterized by overall thinning of hair on
scalp and little loss of hair on crown or hairline. This can begin
at puberty but usually occurs after menopause.
The cause for both types of baldness is attributed to genetic
factors which have been inherited.
Alopecia
Areata
Small circular patches of baldness start
appearing on the scalp and hair re-grows in these patches after few
days. This is called as alopecia areata. Persons who are affected
by this condition will have repeated hair fall and regrowth of the
above mentioned pattern.
In severe condition total loss of scalp hair occurs. This is
called as “alopecia totalis” .Some times complete loss of body
hair also occurs. This is called as “alopecia universalis”. In few
people the hair re-grows . But the hair loss may occur once again.
This is an autoimmune disease.
Hair fall
according ayurveda
According to Ayurveda the hair is considered as
a tissue which uses the same nutrients of bone. The causes of hair
loss are described as follows
- Too much exposure to dust, sunlight, water and other pollutants.
- Too much of sweating.
- Irregular sleeping pattern.
- Anxiety, depression, insomnia.
- Unhygienic way of living
- Diseases
- Alcohol consumption.
Due to these causes the tridoshas get vitiated and cause hair
loss. Medicated oil with the herbs Bringaraja, Amalaki, Haritaki
and vibhitaki is a best remedy for hair fall.
Preventing hair loss:
Hair loss may also occur for reasons where
it is possible to do something about it. If there is any hair loss
and cannot attribute any reason to it, check to see that these
things are not done.
-
Tying hair tightly for prolonged periods.
-
Wearing helmets, tight caps or turbans for long periods.
-
Using strong chemicals in hair.
-
Dieting or eating poor diet.
-
Bacterial or fungal infections of the scalp can also cause loss
of hair. However, these can usually be cured easily with the use
of medicines or medicated shampoos.
How to use shampoo? A number of people just slop shampoo onto
their heads without paying attention to the correct way of
applying it. But it is important to keep a few things in mind:
-
Always ensure that hair is tangle free before shampooing. Before
washing brush hair with head upside down to remove dust and
impurities.
-
Always shampoo gently, using fingertips to work up lather.
-
Start lathering the scalp first. The grease, dirt accumulates
here. Continue lathering moving towards end.
-
Do not pile hair on top of head; let it hang naturally. This
enables the lather to work its own way down from the roots to the
ends.
-
For long hair, shampoo the scalp and then divide the hair into
sections. Gently massage each section downwards, root to tip,
between the palms of hands.
Washing out shampoo:
-
Rinse hair thoroughly with lukewarm water. Hot water dries both
scalp and hair. A shower is the best way of washing out the
shampoo.
-
Should any shampoo remain unwashed it will cause dryness of the
scalp. Don’t rub hair while rinsing.
-
Wet hair is very fragile. Let
the water flow through.
-
After a shampoo, leave hair loose for a while until it is
completely dry, as excess sweat or moisture can damage it.
-
Give hair a final rinse with cold water to stimulate blood
circulation and to close the pores.
-
Take into accounts the type of
water. If salty, mix one or two
pinches of washing soda (sodium carbonate) to the bucket. This
will soften water which would otherwise leave a dulling deposit on
the hair.
Herbal hair cleansers:
Reeta (soapnut) and shikakai form the best
natural therapeutic cleansing base for herbal shampoo, which
cleans gently without adversely affecting the scalp and the hair.
Reeta is best for oil hair as it causes excessive dryness. But the
dryness can be countered by mixing it with amla (gooseberry),
making it suitable for dry hair. Both these herbs are far superior
in their cleansing properties as compared to the synthetic shampoos. Amla has darkening properties, which provides superb
gloss and color to Indian hair. Being the main ingredient of
natural Ayurvedic oils, it also imparts shine to dry and
lusterless hair.
