About Vidanga
Vidanga belongs to Family Myrsinaceae and has a botanical name Embelia Ribes. It is a large semi-climber shrub with long drooping branches. Leaves are simple and their upper surface is shiny. The flowers are greenish-white. The fruits are globular and wrinkled, have greyish berries, and become dark brown when ripe. These berries are also called false pepper as they closely resemble pepper in external appearance. It can be found in India, Indian Archipelago, Tropical Asia, Southern China, and East Africa.
Synonyms of Vidanga
It is known by different names in different regions of India. It is known as Vayvidang, Vaividang, Baibidang, babhirang in hindi, Vidang or Bidang in Bengali, Vayu vidangalu in telagu, Bavidang or Vayvida in marathi, Bavadang in Punjabi, Vayuvilanga in Tamil, Vayuvidanga in Kannada, Vijhala in malayalam.

- Janthuhari and Krimighna as it is helpful to remove parasites.

Health Benefits of Vidanga in Ayurveda
Texts of ayurveda eulogise the medicinal properties of vidanga as follows
Based on principles of Ayurveda Vidanga has katu rasa (pungent taste) and kashaya rasa (astringent taste). After digestion it maintains pungent taste. This herb is light (laghu) to digest and dries up the excess moistness (ruksha) . It is hot in potency (ushna Veerya) and increases the metabolism. With these properties it is used in obesity. Vidanga is one of the powerful weight loss herb. It balances vata dosha and kapha dosha. Roots and fruits are used for medicinal purpose.
Vidanga for weight loss:
As this herb balances vata and kapha , it is considered as a very important fat burner and a potent weight loss herb. It boosts metabolism and dries up moist content of fat cells. Increased metabolism uses up the stored fat of body. According to Ayurveda fat cells are dependent on Kapah dosha. When kapha dosha gets vitiated the fat cells increase. Vidanga normalises kapaha dosha and reduces volume of fat cells in obese people thus aiding the weight loss. This herb increases urine output helps to reduce water retention.
In skin ailments like acne and pimple:
It is applied externally in skin diseases. When used internally it purifies blood and acts on lymph. It reduces inflammation from inside and helps to eliminate skin diseases like acne, pimple, psoriasis, eczema etc. It increases the glow and radiance of skin from inside.
In Indigestion:
Vidanga reduces pain, bloating and flatulence which are caused due to indigestion. It spikes agni or body fire and improves digestion. This herb is very helpful in kindling appetite
In constipation:
This herb helps to relieve constipation. When consumed in form of tea it helps in emptying of bowel. It normalises agni and prevents indigestion. Vidanga sets right digestion and prevents constipation.
In piles or haemorrhoids:
Since it effectively controls agni and helps in constipation, this herb is widely used in treating piles or haemorrhoids. It increases the motility of intestines and eases the bowel evacuation.
In diabetes:
This helps to control diabetes by reducing obesity and blood sugar level.
In intestinal parasites:
